ACOG State Legislative Update (Aug 2007)

This is an encouraging article. It shows that ACOG is on the defensive. The tide has turned toward midwifery and birth choice. And you can see the progress we have made by the concerns reported in this document.

At the turn of the twentieth century, the medical community went on a well documented disinformation campaign against midwives. At the turn of this century we and our clients have campaigned with truth. ACOG is still trying to use the same old tactics. But due in large part to access to the Internet, truth is prevailing.

One statement that is deceptive is "they (direct-entry midwives) do not work collaboratively with hospital-based obstetric providers."

This is only true because the greater portion of physicians cannot, due to peer pressure, or will not work with midwives. It is not the midwife refusing to collaborate.

In addition, as you would expect, ACOG tries to dismiss midwifery studies showing that homebirth is safe. Every mother we serve is another point supporting these studies.
